Mimic Project

Marisa Scheinfeld

Marisa Scheinfeld's work actually inspired me years ago. While in Highschool I stumbled onto her work. I only saw the images and never knew the artist's name. These images below sparked my interest in urban exploration. What's beautiful about these images, is that the location was once a prominent Jewish hotel in the Catskills. The hotel was "a breeding ground" for world-renowned comedians and actors like Jack Benny, Woody Allen, and Mel Brooks. They started their careers in the lounge of this hotel. What's even more fascinating is how in the last couple of decades it's completely forgotten and run down. I love seeing images like this because it makes me think about the history of the location and also makes me wonder what the Earth would look like if Humans just suddenly disappeared.

Kahn & Selesnick

I really like Kahn & Selesnick's style. It's so strange and different. They create a world that's very different from our own but also similar in ways. They take scenes of past and future events and create a glimpse of what it may look like in a parallel universe. What I really like about their work is how they set up their scenes. Each scene has a deep meaning and forces the viewer to ponder on its meaning. I find their work challenging to mimic due to their props for each scene. They have a very creative aspect to their works that I feel I would struggle to try to capture.

Anthony Goicolea

Anthony Goicolea's work has a sense of familiarity to it. For some reason, I feel as if the theme of their pictures, have been shown to me before. When seeing the images in class, most of them reminded me of Disney movies and other children movies. The sense of weirdness and confusion makes my brain excited when viewing the photos. I see a photo that has figures in it, that seems to be very out of place. I think I could easily recreate images like this and have a fun time doing it. I would get some friends together and we'd dress up in strange clothes and find event stranger locations to take a photo at.

Mimic Critique

Mimic Final Result

This project was challenging but still enjoyable to me. I was able to learn a lot about my style when photographing and I also learned to adapt to natural elements. I choose to mimic Marisa Scheinfeld. She focus her photography primarily on abandoned places. I found abandoned trains near my house and decided that this was perfect for the project. I mimicked Marisa’s style of “places forgotten” and locations overrun by nature. The trains were once active and full of life, now they sit abandoned and rusting. I tried to capture specific moments in “time”. For example, I photographed the dining car and sleeper car of the train. Each car has destroyed by humans or nature but the original theme of the car still remained. In the dining car, the table remain welded to the floor; and in the sleeper car, the beds are full of rust and knocked over. Marisa likes to focus on one object in her photos while I focused on the entire atmosphere. I have some objects in my photos but it's mostly just the interior or exterior of the trains. I struggled a lot with exposure. The day I took the pictures, it as very bright out. Most the interior images have intense light coming in through the windows. If i could change one thing, I would probably photograph on a cloudy day. The clouds would help block the intense sunlight, making it easier for me to capture the dimly lit interiors of the train cars.
